I was returning from a vacation to South Texas yesterday and crossed the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos river at Justiceburg, TX. I thought, "Man, I bet I could find a baby softshell out there." So I pulled off, walked down to the river, it was just a trickle, took off my shoes, rolled up my pants legs. Got right out there in the mud. There were lots of very small turtle tracks in the soft red clay of the bottom. I would feel around in the mud wherever a trail seemed to "dead end". Sure enough, in about 20 minutes I had a fine 2" Texas spiny softshell in my hand. Most unbearably cute reptile I ever saw. I am going to set up a tank for him this week.
