Shipping snakes: Your preferred methods

Snakey Sep 17, 2012 01:17 AM

Hello,

Quick question in regards to shipping snakes. It's been a while since my last shipped snake and upon reading different forums it appears UPS doesn't ship snakes anymore.

The airline is not practical for the typical animal and has red tape to deal with. I did notice that FedEx will ship snakes but you need to be certified and go through a series of tasks before obtaining it.

I saw ship your reptile.com but hit a few zip codes and a box that is 12" all the way around at 6lbs will be something outrageous like $280.

So is there an easier way anymore?

Fedex all the way. Yes you need to go through the steps to become certified. Once you are then shipping is easy and much less than shipyourreptile I just tried entering a cross country package at 12 x 12 x 12 6 lbs and was around $115 without any volume discounts.

I've used shipyourreptiles.com and been very happy .. .the quotes are always far less
then my FedEx Quotes for the same shipment.

I've noticed that if you use a box that is a more standard size Box such as 12" (L) X 10"(W) X 7"(H)
the standard size Box will give you a far better price then if
you use a non standard sized box.

The Quote I got from IL. to Cali with the standard size Box 12" (L) X 10"(W) X 7"(H)
was $73.23 Overnight Priority
as compared to $91.54 for straight FedEx priority over night shipping price
.

So my point here is to use a standard size box and that will make all the difference
in the world in your final shipping cost !

I ship a lot and with fedex I get a volume discount so Fedex is the cheapest way for me to go.

The way I save even more each and every time is having a variety of box sizes and selecting the smallest one that will still be adequate for the job. The savings are twofold for me. The smaller boxes cost less to start with and are cheaper to ship. Shipping companies use both weight and dimensions to calculate shipping costs so a larger/lighter box can be more expensive to ship than smaller/heavier one.

I appreciate it.

I don't know what you entered to get a $280 quote, but there must have been some entry error.

You def want to use the smallest box you can, as you are charged for either actual weight or dimensional weight, whichever is higher. A smaller box will have a smaller dimensional weight.

The most popular box size used at SYR is the 12x9x6 box.

Most shipments are in the $55-$80 range for Priority Overnight.

The ShipYourReptiles rates are hard coded at 20% off the FedEx rate, so it will always be cheaper than the FedEx retail rate for the same package.

FedEx offers a deeper discount for volume shippers, and so do we.

SYR also allows for shipping to and from Residential addresses, which is not allowed with regular FedEx reptile accounts, and we offer On-Time and Live Arrival Insurance, another benefit not found with any other live reptile shipping method.

Im assuming the dimensions and weight were off. I was putting even numbers, etc. So, the smallest box and weight is key.

Would it be safer to say 2 small pkg are cheaper than 1 larger?

For the best rates on a smaller animal what sized box is best or is there a database I can view a list of "typical" sizes of boxes?

Thx

The 12x9x6 box is the most popular size, most frequently shipped.

Two small boxes are typically going to be more expensive than one medium sized box.

At ShipYourReptiles.com, you can run quotes all day long for free, just enter the to and from zip codes, and then try different box sizes to see how the price changes.

I'm FedEx certified and SYR has always beat the rate FedEx has given me.. LOVE SYR YOUR GUYS ROCK!!!

I use the 7x7x6 size you can fit 3-4 baby boas in bags comfortably in this size box... I rarely pay more than $50 per shipment when using this box size through SYR
