First time having a Kingsnake

leela_ Sep 24, 2012 07:15 AM

I recently got a 6/7month old female kingsnake and in the last month she has been very moody and striking when I go to pick her up, anyone know what could cause the behaviour change and any tips to help calm her down?

She may be striking for several reasons. In could be a personality thing as I have had several kings that were a bit nippy especially as hatchlings. If she is in "blue", about to shed her eyesight becomes a bit limited so for a small snake with limited vision, they can be a bit defensive. Lastly, It may depend on your feeding practices;
is she being fed enough
is her enclosure only opened during feeding time
how often is she handled
another thought
have you tried using a snake hook or something similar to remove her from the enclosure, she may calm down once in hand
Best of luck
