Eastern King struck by car

naughtysnakes Sep 28, 2012 09:15 PM

Hi, unfortunately on my way to work today, I narrowly avoided a large eastern (5' ) on the side of the road but when I pulled over to see it, I realized it must have been struck by a car because it was having a hard time moving its rear. It was slow in its movements, showed no signs of blood, but did have a mushy feeling were I think the tire got it. It also made no attempt to bite, to me it looked and behaved like it was in shock. I was torn with what to do, I considered shooting it (which I really did not want to do, but what I would have done with a furry creature) but decided not to and give it a fighting chance since its injure look further back. So I quickly rushed it back home, snapped two quick pics, put it in a cage, and went to work. My question is, has any one heard of a snake surviving a car strike and does anyone have any advice, other than take it to a vet (I made calls, and it is a wild snake and not endangered either, so no help there). I am sure if it lives, I can never release it because I don't see it having any strength or speed. Anyway, if it is alive when I get home I will post some pictures. BTW it is from Atlantic County NJ.
Thanks Mark

Sadly it was dead when I returned from work. Having trouble posting pics, I will try later.

Poor planning and procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

In my experience, they always end up dying. I think there is too much internal damage to do anything. I'd rather find them dead than dying slowly. I hope it pulls through for you.
