sphagnum. mostly because it holds moisture well.

Definitely sphagnum - the long fiber kind, NOT peat moss (which is ground up sphagnum).

New Zealand Spaghnum Orchid Moss is the best in my opinion....Clean and very absorbent. It holds moisture well and does not mold.

Only true, New Zealand long fibered sphagnum will touch any of my snakes.

I first was introduced to this amazing moss when I started cultivating and selling carnivorous plants when I was a teen. Holds moisture well, does not decompose and crumble like "green moss (I HATE HATE HATE so called "Reptile Moss", "Terrarium Moss", etc...pure garbage), "clean", and mold resistant.

Best moss hands down.
