Thinking about getting a Ball but kinda nervous...

Smuffin Oct 06, 2003 01:39 PM

I was terrified of snakes until my son wanted one. Then we would argue over who is going to hold him. So I went out and bought my own snake. I have 1 albino black rat, and 3 corns.
I am now thinking about getting another snake but not quite sure what kind. Thinking hard about a Ball python. Is there anything that I should know about them? I don't have alot of experience with snakes. But the ones I have I love them. Any input would greatly be appreciated....

Ball python (Python regius) is generally a very docile snake. Their name resembles their action of "balling up" when threatened, rather then striking or lashing out, as do some other snakes. If I were you, I would do an internet search for Ball python guides, manuals, or care sheets, there are many informative sites out there. You should buy the Ball python Manual by Philippe de Vosjoli, it helped me and I think others can agree. In my opinion, that book is the best $10 I spent so far. =) hope I helped alittle,

I agree, read all you can. Balls are the perfect beginner snake in my opinion, if you can get past the not eating for 6 months at a time. If you're not easily stressed out, and can realize that a snake is gonna be a snake, and let them be, you'll do great. "The Ball Python Manual", though outdated for experienced herpers, is a wonderful book for ball python beginners. Good luck.

I think that balls make a great snake pet! I got into them last year when a pet shop worker I know offered me one for free, because the snake had been returned to the store twice for biting people. This is NOT normal ball python behavior, though! My other two balls never have bitten me, and are so docile.
BPs are so cool, they're so full of character and they (in my experience) are voracious feeders usually. Your only problem could be, like me, when you get hooked on them and have to keep buying more, cuz they're so cool!
I would ask to watch the snake you're interested in, feeding. I would also only buy from a GOOD pet shop, or better yet a trustworthy online breeder. Reptile shows are awesome; got my nice big male from one a few weeks ago. Good luck!
