Night crawlers for Cresties?

TasiaMay Oct 06, 2003 01:57 PM

Just curious ... would night crawlers (the kind used for fishing) be okay to feed my 4 sub adult crested geckos? Right now they are on a straight cricket diet (with baby food/CGD once a week), but I would love to offer some variety. If night crawlers are not okay, can anyone suggest another food source ... maybe small meal worms?

Thanks in Advance!

. . . I've just (for 2 weeks) started feeding small mealies to my crested gecko juvies and larger mealies to the adults to see how it goes. I have witnessed my smallest crestie snarf down a mini-mealie with little problem.

I have been feeding CGD mixed with baby food - they all seem to be doing great - but boy, baby cresteds sure don't eat very much, do they. I'm still learning how to mix just a dab of CGD for them to eat. Wow!!

That being said - they look great and seem to be growing. We'll have to see, I guess.

Mealworms . . . .you can't eat just one

Monte,
The diets can be frozen. That is what I do. I mix batches of it and distrubute in mini ice cube trays for babys and regular size ones for adults. I use 2 mini ice cubes to feed 3-4 babies and juvies. The good thing about feeding the diets is that you can raise groups of babies without worrying about aggressive competition for food. Also, For babies, you might want to try the GGD. It is higher in protien and you will get better growth rates if that is something you are looking for.
good luck

I think I can handle roaches. Bugs don't scare me ... lol. Know any info about how to feed them or where to get them? Is their exoskeleton too hard for a cresty's jaws? Or do you feed them the babies? Any info is appreaciated!

Thanks Again -

You would just feed baby roaches, adult roaches would be way too big and the shell would be too hard. But if you ever get a bearded dragon they would be great! You can also sell off excess starter colonies to people and make a few bucks, since they breed so fast. You can feed baby mealies to your crested as Monte mentioned, I used them before when I ran out of crix, but most of my guys were not interested anyway. They also have a higher fat content, something that could be a problem with adult rhacs, so I really never recommended them. Best of Luck!
