Will females lay eggs without a male?

chwelch Oct 06, 2003 02:22 PM

Hello,

I have two D. azureus and recently found eggs. The eggs were not good, apparently unfertilized. So I know at least one frog is female. Can I assume that the other is male, or will females lay unfertilized eggs without a male to stimulate them?

Hi,

I haven't really ever heard of this actually occuring-- I have 3 female auratus alone in a tank, and they've never laid eggs. What it possibly is, is the fact that sometimes when darts start laying eggs, the female's eggs won't be good until after a couple of tries. She'll eventually get it right though. So just be patient and you'll see results. I bet it can be frustrating though. One of my pairs just went into their cocounut hut like 15 minutes ago, so i've got my fingers crossed!

Not sure about auratus, but female pumilio definitely lay infertile eggs without males. I had a couple of females isolated in their own vivs and I found a few infertile clutches here and there.

my imitators have laid eggs without a male in their tank. but there was a calling male in the tank next to them... so maybe that stimulated them to produce eggs.
