Let's see your snake room!

Dniles Nov 03, 2012 07:14 AM

I am interested to see how everyone maintains their collection. I recently moved my collection from a spare bedroom down into the basement since I outgrew the spare room and my wife wanted the space for her hobbies!

I have my collection seperated into two rooms: a hot room for my small collection of boas and hatchlings/yearlings that I want to keep feeding during the winter and then my colubrid room where I maintain the adult and subadult colubrids all year long.

Here is the colubrid room. First is a shot of the 15qt and 32 qt racks where most of the NA milks are

Here is the large colubrid racks where I keep my Cosalas, getula and lodingi (yes I have black pine snakes!)

At the edge of the colubrid room is a small mouse colony in an old snake rack that I converted to a mouse rack, a sink and a freezer. The sink was the best addition to the snake room. So convenient.

Here is the hot room and a wall of cages where I keep some boas

And the other side of the room where the hatchings and yearlings are. Oh and there is also a 10 gallon aquarium with an anole and skink. they are dual purpose: cool pets and they are great to scent with!!

I hope you enjoyed. I look forward to seeing what your set ups look like.

Hi Dave

Nice set up. You got a nice variety of cages animals. Thanks for sharing.

Here is a few pics of mine. Didn't have all my hatchling racks in the room at the time.

Very nice Jason - thanks for posting.

I am curious about the rack in the second picture with the green watering bucket on top. Did you make that or buy it? What size tubs are in it? It looks like 41qt size tubs in there?

I am always looking for ways to do racks with larger tubs like that, especially with the tubs sliding in on their short side like that.

Also how do you like that rack with the glass shelves or is that heavy plexi glass?

Awesome coral snake by the way - wow what a find!

Hi Dave

The plexi glass rack sucks. It would probably work better if the glass was thinker. I just had the materials kickin around and through it together.

The white rack with the green water pitch has 70 quart tubs. The half stack with the aquarium on top has 41 quart tubs. The are made the same way, I made them. I used 1 1/5 metal studs with peg board so the tubs got ventilation. Here is a couple pics. I had pics of how to build, but lost them. The are pretty light weight.

Thanks Jason

they look very useful. did you get those metal studs at a place like Lowes or Home Depot? If you find the plans please send them to me. I may need another 41qt or 70qt rack.

If I had a snake room I'd certainly post it... but I don't have one. As of this moment I simply have two sets of enclosures... here's a picture of one of them that I've posted before...

I can't imagine having much more than another two pair of snakes after this year let alone an entire room. Where do you find the time for the feeding/cleaning/handling/etc?

Nice cages Gerry. I like those a lot.

I spend time down there every night really after the kids goto bed. Now my oldest son who is 7 is starting to take an interest in them so I get to spend time with him down there as well. He is quite a big help!

Awesome snake rooms Dave. Is that milk with the crest tooth paste box in its inclosure a Na Milk, If so thats an awesome animal low band count, looks like a sinaloan I imagine thats what it is...I would post mine but its rather simple, I only have 9 animals, 3 of which are in the refridgerator, 3 of them are skinks and a fence lizard. I am currently just using plastic shoe boxes with zip ties to make sure the lid is secure, I have colubrid racks and am building custom cages, but have a very simple setup at the moment. Next fall I will most likely have a "snake room". I will also post pics of my cages when I complete them.
awesome stuff as usuall, and sounds good on those triangulum just put me down on the list for next year.

I also like your posters, I have the same NA triangulum poster. I don't have the range poster that is pretty cool, where did you get that?

Dniles Nov 05, 2012 12:45 PM

Hey Brandon

Man you have an eye for detail! That poster on the wall is a NA milk range map that I copied out if Williams book and printed poster size.

The snake you mentioned is a 2011 Male Cosala Sinaloan.

Talk with you soon
Dave

Dave,
Yeah I can't help my eye for detail I have to focus on perfection at one of my jobs the siding job, It also can help when viewing pics with habitat, seeing key components like barns or certain trees etc. I thought that was williams range map, great Idea!

Heres some recent pics of my celaenops and some cage set ups

I have started using scraps of hardie siding (fiber cement siding) I think they enjoy it resembling rock fissures

Here is a feeding for 2 of fuzzy legs

heres my female celaenops finishing up her 4th fuzzy leg

Hah! Too funny! We have the same identical sump pump and buckets!
Somebody is spending a lot of time in his snake room?

Too funny! That sump pump comes in handy doesn't it??

Down to just a handful of tail eaters now!

Dave

BrandonD Nov 05, 2012 07:20 PM

I prefer to use mice/fuzzy legs instead of tails, a lot more meat and slides down just as nice, and you can still use the by product to feed to your other snakes, I have gotten a lot of snakes on mice this way, I always offer it to them on there own first, and eventually it happens, then its on to the full thing after that provided they are big enough

Mine remains quite unchanged over the last 9 years but I'm currently planning to take out the racks and put in a bank of twelve 3' X 2' X 1.75' units, most with sub floor compartments. These will mostly house pairs of NA ratsnakes.
