I live in Waco and recently found a big male TxTort in the street in front of my house. I have wondered the same about their northern limit too. Surely this is pretty far north for them. I wondered if he was a pet. He may be pretty old since he is large: 10 inches long, 8 inches wide. That is actually larger than the maximum size I have read about. I am in a dilemma about his winter care. He's moved into my back yard where he took up residence under an abandoned rock barbecue pit. It's a good dark hiding place for him. He comes out on nice days to sun. I feed him whatever he wants to eat: cactus, carrots, spinach, squash, fruit, kale. I would prefer to return him to the wild, but I am a little concerned that he can't take care of himself if he has been a pet. He is considered to be a threatened species in Texas - which means it is illegal to posses him. So I am careful not to do that! He just took up residence in my back yard....
Anyone have experience with these guys? Especially with releasing them...
