The old ways

corporateprey Nov 05, 2012 11:24 PM

When I was younger I used to love tromping around the country field herping - you know - the big black south carolina kings, fat nerodia in Arkansas, etc. That was great.

But now I just hang out at herp shows and buy up all the crap that didn't get sold at the end of the show.

I put them all together in my basement and let them breed - corns, kings, milks - I mean, who really cares?

I hatch the eggs then pick out the purple-ish ones, give them a fancy name and peddle them on the internet!

Easy-peasy!

Joe

This may be a troll thread, but I'll bite.

For me, I think I will be always be a field herper with pet snakes. Haha

I think it's a mad thread.
I agree with you, nothing beats walking in the woods, or sometimes paddling.

That is the great thing about this hobby. We don't have to limit ourselves to just one part of it. i know some people do and their is dissention because opne group thinks themselves higher than the other.

Me personally I am a field herper first. Then i am about locality specific animals...and i mean REALLY animal specific locales. Like the exact rockpile they came from and not a mile apart.

Then i like morphs and hybrids. Heck i like all parts of the hobby. I think they all have their place. To me, they are all different parts and I enjoy all of them. Hence, why we have different forums for different herps.

I understand the feeling, I get that sometimes.
I like maintaining a collection for something to tide me over when I can't get out and hunt...the winters are the worst.

If I can't fish or snake hunt, I like taking care of the animals ...but I get exactly what you are saying.

Chris, nice copperhead shot. Do you have any other photos of them? One of my favorite snakes, and IMO, one of the most beautiful. I used to find TONS of them at one of my forty year old herp spots (damn that sounds bad). Anyway, illegals that started fishing the shore have killed most of them. Hard to find a single one nowadays. And yes, I know they are illegals because they have been "rounded up" and marched out of there several times by the local law enforcement. (the area is closed to any foot traffic). Such a shame. Sorry, photos?

That's the way to roll! I take it one step further. I usually let all my het-for-purple ones go in the field too, so as to improve upon the wild genetics. I am proud to say in the areas where I have let stuff go I have been seeing some funky stuff pop up now and then!

THAT is a joke, right?!

Aaron Nov 09, 2012 07:30 PM

Yes I'm joking! I thought it would be obvious since I am pretty well known as a locality "purist" but I guess I haven't been posting much in the last few months.
