Question about housing 2 boas together

kfisher29 Nov 18, 2012 02:43 PM

I've got a c.b. 2010 columbian boa and a c.b. 2010 peruvian red tail boa together in a 40 gallon breeder tank and i've noticed that the male red tail is trying to breed the columbian boa. They both are still small, probably 3 1/2 to 4 feet maybe each. My question is will it harm the female if they do breed and she's not big enough. I've heard that it will kill the female. Don't know if this is true and have never witnessed anything like that. Thanks in advance for any information.

I think it'd be best to separate them.
IF the female were to take (kinda doubtful I'm betting), it definitely wouldn't be all that healthy for her, nor successful.
Snakes are solitary creatures by nature, regardless. A 40 gallon doesn't seem large enough to allow them enough 'personal space'.

Another important note- are you planning on breeding these two down the line? It's my opinion (and I know it's shared amongst many) that keeping locality bloodlines pure is a pretty good idea. You might also have a rough time selling cross babies.

I didn't plan on breeding them and if by some chance she did have babies they would just be given to friends. I'm totally against hybrids myself. I keep a number of other snakes and have for years, but have never kept or been interested in boas or pythons till the last 2-3 years. Both were given to me by friends. I plan on moving them to a bigger enclosure sometime. They seem to have plenty of room now, they can stretch out and they seem to choose to lay with each other instead of apart and they have the room to be seperate, but 90% of the time they just lay on top of each other. I've always kept all my other snakes seperate to avoid stress, but have seen quite a few people keep boas together so i figured it wouldn't hurt. I'll probably go ahead and seperate them to avoid any problems though.

The previous writer was obviously being too kind and you didn't hear what they were trying to express. Do not house boas together of any sex unless they are being bred during that period. The male may over breed and the females may become over stressed. Not good for either snake. Dont be cheap, go buy a second cage or give one of the two snakes to all the friends you have who are into reptiles.

Asshole comments like yours is why I don't post on the kingsnake.com forums anymore. I've been a member for 12 years. Lots of other people feel the same way as me. This is suppossed to be a community where people with common interests can come together and discuss their reptiles and potential problems they may have without some [bleep]head flaming them. The snakes have been seperated, not that you'de give 2 craps about the animals anyway. At least I have friends. Thanks for turning a simple question about boa housing into assuming I'm to cheap to buy more cages since you know so much about me computer tough guy. I can guarantee you wouldn't talk to me like that in person!

Blah blah blah...

If you have been on this forum for twelve years, you would have known that you can't house adult boas.

This is also a community were stupid questions have never been fielded well.

Blah blah blah...
