I have a lesser male that's weighing in at 595g I know this just barely makes the cut and in some opinions may not make it at all. Anyway he hasn't eaten in three weeks and I'm thinking that he's making his stand and telling me that he wants to breed rather than eat. I was planning on breeding him to three girls this season which would have him breeding every week. My questions are this:
At 595g I am fairly certain it would be safe to breed him. I know the general rule of thumb is 600g, but I've heard stories of 400g males being bred so I can't really picture 595g being all that terrible. Am I wrong?
If I do breed him I obviously should use caution, but I'm not exactly sure what this means. If I breed him straight through and he looses to much weight and I pull him and he still refuses to eat I don't see how that would help him. So should I drop him down to maybe just a single female and breed him maybe once a month or would I be better of to hold off on him till later in the season and hope to get a few more meals in him? But then again if he doesn't eat I may have lost my opportunity to breed him this year.
Or am I just worrying too much about the situation since he is almost 600g and breed him the same as my 1000 gram breeders?
This is the first time I will have bred a male this low on weight so I don't have anything to compare it to. Just trying to learn from others mistakes and limit my risk.
Thanks for any help
