Basic Feeding Question

snakemother Nov 22, 2012 09:11 AM

Hello again! Thanks for putting up with all my questions, and for all your informative and supportive replies. Now that our new boa is eating, I'm wondering how often and how much I should feed him. I tend to over-feeding, and have been told that isn't good for a boa - he might eat even if he's not hungry, unlike my other snakes. He's 4 1/2 feet long, and I just gave him one medium rat (about 5 inches long not counting tail) and it took him a bit to get it down, even though it wasn't as big as he is around. Just wondering how often I should feed him, and if one is enough. Thanks so much for your help!

Everyone is different, but I feed adult boas every two weeks, one food item, slightly less large in diameter than the thickest part of the boa. Sometimes I do slightly smaller even, for males with tiny little heads

MY basic rule of thumb for boas is not to feed them until they've defecated their last meal, but most of mine tend to poop like clockwork. This doesn't apply to my Emerald, obviously, and my yearling and my adopted, undersized two year old get two rat pups per week.

Important boa lesson: It is much easier to over feed a boa than to underfeed one, especially when you are new to boas.
