What do you raise rats up in

Seeves1982 Nov 22, 2012 10:19 PM

I'm looking for ideas that are not rack related to raise rats up in. I've seen pro rat breeders bring huge plastic crates to shows, but I haven't been able to find out where they get them. I'm looking for something larger than a 55ga aquarium with a food hopper. Anyone have any idea where I could get or how I could make this?

large wire cages with pull out metal pans work....just make sure they are cleaned enough....and the rats can hold on when you try and remove them....still works....

I used 20 gal. long aquariums...you don't want bigger...you have to pick it up to clean it....

food industry has large rubbermaid hard polycarbonate (?) pans in different sizes....they work great....no need to buy a lid ....make one from wore mesh -1/4 inch...and 1 x 4 boarding....if you have a food service store near you....not cheap$$$$

at shows you mean the plastic , white, lab shipping boxes?...Taconics?....you don't raise stuff in them...just transfer and shipping...not sure what you see though....

....go to hardware and other stores and look around.....

even use sheet plexiglass and silicone to make your own custom sized boxes....?.....even with a wood frame

....

You could buy a big galvanized tub and make a lid with a food hopper out of 1/4 inch wire mesh. Add a couple of water valves and they would be good to go. You could also add a mesh floor, and connect the drain to an outside drain, then all you'd need to do is flush the tub to clean it without taking the rats out and changing bedding.

Just curious why you wouldn't want to use the rack style system. I have 48 females along a 6-7' wall. I produce several hundred per month. My tubs cost $5 and I can build a 12 unit rack for about $150 with tubs and bottles.

Honestly. It's not that I'm against a rack. I'm actually for it just not right now. I've already got $400 invested in breeder tubs so I was just going to stick with that route. My rat colony is still fairly small since my snake collection is still very small. Plus I haven't figured out exactly how I would like my racks set up. I don't know if I want a raising rack, breeding rack, pregnant rack or if I just want to have two raising size racks and go 1.3 permenantly. I don't really want to start building racks until I decide what I want completely. I was just going to get a couple raising tubs to hold me over for the time being.
