Substrate: Opinions on rabbit pellets

Snakey Nov 26, 2012 01:45 PM

Ok, so we've seen tortoise folks do it, etc and was wondering if anyone uses, or knows others that do, use rabbit pellets as a substrate.

It's cheap, non toxic, absorbs well, mites (from what I have been told) don't do we'll on it, etc.

What's your opinion?

It molds (or grows fungus, whatever) with even a little mositure if the cage does not have alot of ventilation. And most boa cages are not ventilated much and have lots of moisture. Plus it is heavy, which is not good if using tubs.

It works better in dry cages. That is my opinion.

It could work but would create more maintainence that could far away exceed the benefit of rabbit pellets low cost- having to spot clean constantly from any water the pellets come into contact with to reduce fungal growth. Also, it would act as a desiccant and draw moisture from the boa, so you may run into shedding problems.
