mattman....your killin me!.....ha, j/k.....but I'm still worried

keith_ecko Oct 06, 2003 06:34 PM

Well I put paper towels completely around the aquarium to give THOR more privacy and he seems a little more secure...My girlfriend mentioned this afternoon after work he actually moved around the tank..one end to the other, but I noticed the 5 crix I dropped in the tank from this morning are still in there which means he didn't eat them...I also put some dry bearded dragon food in that I bought (even though I don't like that stuff) just so he'd eat something but I don't think he touched that either...So now I am getting kinda concerned...I misted him this morning and just a little while ago and he willing lapped that up off his snout...Should I still give him some time or is there another step I should take....He doesn't seem lethargic..he's attentive and moves around...just not eating and I did notice a small lil poo near his basking spot!

pooping and attentiveness are good. i havent been following your posts (bad somegirl bad!) so i dont know much about your dragon. if hes in a new home he could just still be stressed. are the crix about the same size as the space between his eyes? does he have uvb, how warm is the basking spot, etc etc

Yes I have a powersun merc...a good but simple setup...the crickets are 1/4" which would be the space between his eyes...the basking spots is good at a steady 109 everyday...the middle zone of the tank is usually about 87..the end of the tank (cool zone) fluctuates from 80-83 degrees....at night temps stay around 74 I've noticed since it's cooled off....I been gutloading the crix with baby cereal, potato, some sandfire ranch gutload, and orange. and shanke n bakin with calcium w/vitd3 and and multivitamin from repcal...so everything that I researched is good!

sounds great! since it doesnt look like theres any problem with his setup, id give him a couple more days without handling or offering food too often to let him settle in. my newest lil guy (actually girl i hope lol) didnt want to eat for me the first couple days, and everyone told me here to just give Kellen a little bit more time. now he's eating like a champ but if after a few more days yours still isnt interested, yuo might wanna get a fecal done or order some parazap.

I could be mistaken but I think you will want to change your gutload. From what I've been reading there's been a history of Crickets dying along with Dragons using that gutload. Can't recall the details but something about the gel expanding.

CheriS will be able to tell you for sure. She has done a ton of research and has a lot of knowledge on the subject.

Flukers gutload is the cricket killer, not Sandfire.

I thought Sandfire Dragon Ranch was a part of Fluker Farms.

I am gutloading the crix with baby cereal, oatmeal, potato, oranges, and the gutload that SANDFIRE dragon ranch makes which if I am correct isn't from Flukers....

I have also heard that you shouldn't gutload crix with citrus fruit.

hey my advise is to try to mimic his enviroment as closely as possible make shure he has everything he needs available and then just wait i haven't been folowing your story so i dont know the conditions really but i know that if he/she has enough room enough food enough etc.. he/she will probly just need to have time to get used to everything it is after all a big move for a small animal to go into a new home after all i hope you got something out of all that

Your set up sounds excellent, oh but do you have a pic? Gotta really keep things simple for the little guys. Many people start babies in a bin with a basking rock and paper towels as a substrate and that's it nothing fancy. Gives them an easier time catching the food. Not saying if you set up a beautiful extravagant enclosure to change it, please don't. But take that into consideration from where he came from and what the breeder had for him. Most likely what I said above a basking rock and basking light, in a small Rubbermaid bin with 10 siblings is what he is used too. Maybe you can try to feed him in a seperate smaller container where it is just him and a cricket, I did this for a few of my babies until they where juviniles. Do not throw in more than 1 cricket at a time cause this can scare him if there are too many. Your temps are fine, paper towel covering the sides will help relax him which is good, your keeping handling to a minimum, and offering food daily, and keeping him hydrated. Nothing more you can do for the little guy to help settle him in any faster. Some dragons just take longer then others. It is good that he pooped, at least you know he ate before. How long have you had him exactly, and what if anything has he eaten for you? If mine have not eaten anything when I first get them after a week. I offer them a mixture of some beardie pellets soaked in water till very soft, some squash & sweet potato baby food, with a pinch of calcium with d3, and a multi vitamin added. you could even throw in some crix but that is optional. Food process this all up and add water till it is of a consistency that can be drawn up into a needless syringe you can get one at a pet store or an eye dropper will do and feed like you've been giving the water. If he doesn't take it right away pull down and part his back lips and let him taste it. He should take it now once he realizes it is food and tastes pretty good. This does consist of enough vitamins to sustain him. You really want to get him feeding on his own as fast as possible so you don't spoil him with this kind of feeding. Most do come around within 2 weeks. If you really feel there is a problem do not hesitate to take him to a vet with a stool sample if possible. Good Luck Keith. I really hope he comes around for you. Any more questions please come back and ask. Matt
