Looking Back, Looking Ahead
Happy New Year to all and their families! It is our sincere wish that all of you will enjoy good health, prosperity, safety and love in 2013 and that you will all be here to celebrate 2014. That may be a tall order in this fast paced world, but nonetheless we have our hopes.
This is the time when many of us traditionally look back at where we have been and ahead to where we are going, all tinged with some joy, relief, maybe some regret but with hope and maybe some prayers for a better or at least no worse new year ahead. Our lives are set up to run in cycles and each cycle with a finite limit so that when we ‘make it though’ we can celebrate a little. I wonder what life was like for our species before the calendar was invented. I guess there were still seasons, at least in the more temperate zones, but imagine just living each day, one after the next, from the beginning of your years to the end, without stopping along the way to assess our progress or lack thereof. Maybe that would be a better system, just doing what you had to do or wanted to do without regards to any set schedule or artificial time frame. Living year to year may give us a more immediate insight into how we are doing, but maybe only relative to the year before. When we look at historical figures, we look at their achievements as a whole, for their lifetimes, not what they did year to year. Some in fact may have only done great things during a very short time span, maybe only once in a lifetime, but we still tend to look at their lives as a whole and decide if their time on earth was worthy of admiration or condemnation or even remembering. Does measuring our progress by year, or month or day rob us of the ‘big picture’? Just wondering….
No one of us knows what the future will bring, not the richest or smartest or most famous or humble. The future is guaranteed to no one. All we can do is to hope for the best, give our maximum effort and be grateful for each day we are given. Thinking more of what we have than worrying about what we don’t have and what we can do as opposed to what we cannot will give us a greater satisfaction for the life we live in the time we are each allotted. A past full of good memories to look back on is a reward for those who always look forward with a happy willing spirit and take life as it comes, giving each day our very best.
We wish all of you a wonderful 2013 filled with days that you will fondly remember for years to come.
