Rat Breeding Question

keng1111 Jan 02, 2013 12:27 PM

Hi, I'm new to rat breeding and I just had a couple questions. I have the temp around 65 and keep all of the bins clean I was just wondering I am doing something wrong or does this just happen in the winter? Is it easy to tell when the females are pregnant and do you take the males out? And if I have a ratio of 1.3 and see that 2 females are pregnant can I remove both and put in another bin and would they fight or kill each other's babies? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

65 is pretty cold, you don't need to keep them like mice. Females become very round when pregnant, very easy to tell. No need to sperate, they will actually help each other raise the little ones! Good luck.

I usually left them all together. The mothers helped raise the babies and males tend to not kill babies that are theirs.

Thanks for the replies. What temp would be the best for breeding? So there are different temps for breeding rats and mice? All four adults with babies can be left in a tub?

I am thinking of starting breeding my own rats, so I am following this thread with interest. Thanks guys for the tips!

I try to keep my rodent room between 70-75, with a fan running at all times and vents that are set on timers to get the smelly air out of the room, but not take all the cold/hot air out depending on time of the year. I keep breeder tubs of 1.3 and never separate anything.
