An Adult Ghost Corn

Ted Oct 06, 2003 06:54 PM

After seeing Marcel's Hercules I had to post a picture of my son's corn snake Spectre. He may have to trim down too.

GIGANTIC!

I thought I read somewhere in Kathy's book that a good way to tell if a snake is obese is if the body size has exceeded the scales ability to cover the "skin" (i.e. scales don't overlap at all anymore). That and/or wierd skin foldings...

How often do you feed that monster?

Hi,

I can't agree with you more, Spectre is a chunk. Marcel's post of Sept. 26th prompted me to check all of our snakes. Spectre and our JCP were being feed too frequently. Research has clearly established that animals (mammals) live longer if their calories are restricted.

Spectre was being feed one mouse a week. This was a habit of human convenience but this regular schedule is not the best for the diverse ages and needs of our charges. It was so easy to get into habits for the young but not change the schedule according to our animals needs. Lesson learned. Spectre’s feeding will change to 1 mouse/rat pup every 2 weeks and we’ll see after that. A schedule that I am considering is to feed after each defecation–again requiring more attention to detail.

Yes, the Love’s book (with Kathy’s signature) is on the shelf - the wrong place for it. I’ve now gone through all my references again and am fine-tuning each animals husbandry.

Thank you. And the chunky ghost thanks you.

Enjoy the Day,
George

He is huge, that's for sure. What a lovely collection you have. I see the Green tree python just had his color change. Awesome.

Hi Marcel,

Thank you for your comments.

It was your post on Sept 26th that got me thinking about and then adjusting the feeding schedules for some of our snakes. Our convenience is not the best for our charges. Thank you again.

Enjoy the Day,
George

Hi George,

It's nice to hear someone actually read the stuff I am venting here
