BRRRRR.......Motherlode Sierra Nevada

pyromaniac Jan 15, 2013 11:27 AM

Last fall when I began brumation for my kings and pits I was a bit concerned that the temperatures would ever fall low enough, as several weeks went by with warm temps. It was a really long gradual cool down, though, which is a good thing. Then the temps fell off a cliff and it was a big chore to keep the indoor temps in my cabin in the mid forties at night! Outdoors it got down to 10 degrees F at night one night, averaging 12 F to 15 F below most nights recently. Average normal is the low 30's F in my neck of the woods. All my snakes are doing fine.

My mouse colony has done well in the old unheated but well insulated RV. Today is mouse tub washing day, an outdoor chore. My hands don't like that, but with a big pan of hot water its not so bad, and the mice always look so happy with clean quarters.

The only casualty I have had is an outdoor pipe valve cracked because I forgot to cover it.

Wht have the rest of you experienced with these arctic temps?

Although not as cold as the temperatures you are experiencing in the Sierras, it has been pretty darn cold here in San Francisco. Nighttime low's at around low 40s, highs during the day at around 50-52F.

All my Lampropeltis (pyros, zonata, getula, triangulum) are cooling in the basement hallway where the temps reflect the outdoor temps.

I am sure they are fine?

My garters however are restless and keep wanting to eat!
