a 1 month old baby with a 10 month-old.... will it work?

maggie* Oct 06, 2003 07:39 PM

Hi all!
Know that I'm comfortable with the fact that Mortimer is brumating... [ thanks so much for the advice and tips guys ]
I have a new (very exciting!) question...
Will my boy (I'm pretty sure 'he's' male, his femoral pores are pretty big) get along with a new cagemate? My favourite reptile hangout finally has Malis (they're hard to get in Toronto), I need to get organized. Mortimer is living in a 4x2x2 cage, there's heaps of space. My plan (if you all think it's feasible) is to leave a mirror in his cage for a couple of days to suss it out. Then, if I get the baby, to keep him/her in a glass tank INSIDE Mortimer's terrarium so (1)the baby isn't completely overwhelmed and can find it's food and (2) so they have a chance to check eachother out and get use to eachother. Has anyone tried this or have any suggestions about the age difference. I'm thinking cause the little guy is so little that Mort shouldn't feel too threatened or aggressive towards him/her. Of course, I wouldn't be able to sex the little guy, ut when they're that small do you think it matters?
Fingers crossed you all report back with good news... What do you think?
maggie.

hum, i have heard that a BIG size difference they should get along well and same size difference sometimes get along well. i would say you can try it. just make sure that as the young one gets older, if it turns out to be a male try and make different livign arrangements if it is female then you are lucky. i cant tell you much on this since i have two similar sized uros.
Good luck and hope it works!!!!

The only problem is the food has to be chopped up a lot smaller for the small uro so you would have to have 2 food dishes. I think that if you raise two uros together from an early age that they should get along when they are adults no matter what sex, but i am not sure. also, If you have sand in his tank then hatchling might get impacted, but other than that they should be fine.
