jodrock Jan 20, 2013 06:51 PM

I have a kahl hypo het albino and i am planning on breeding her. I cant find a hypo het albino male big enough so i decided i am going to change directions and breed her with a pastel. If i do this will the babies be pastel? i am not sure because i know the kahl has to breed with a kahl for alibinos but is it the samewith pastels?

Breed her to an albino male, see if she proves out to be het albino. If she does, you got sunglows. If she don't, you'll have hypo hets and normal hets.

Hi jodrock,

I would hold off on breeding her to any non het albino boa. There is not a good market for plan normal's and hypo not het for anything. Keep looking around you will find a het albino soon you may have to buy a sud adult or a baby het albino and grow him up for your breeding project. Most male babies can breed with in two years so it not to long of a wait. Now as for the pastel I hope you know the pastel boa is not a morph it's just selective breeding for color. Anyone can produce pastel boas from none pastel boas. My first boa breeding back in 97 I produced 8 pastel boas from two normal dark colored boas. The pastel trait has been over used for years and a lot of people just don't know what it really is so they add the pastel name to there boas just so they can sell them for a little more money. The only thing the pastel trait will do for your hypo is it may clean up some of the black color in your babies. However these babies will not be worth very much.

There are some babies het albino for sell on this reptile site and a few other big named sites. I even still have one 2012 male DH Sunglow for sale. Just so you know a hypo het for albino is a DH for sunglow boa.

This info was taken from Jeff Ronnes site he is the man that named the first Pastel boa.

A Pastel is this: A Boa that has an odd overall wash lacking the normal amount of black and a reduction in black pigmentation in particular throughout the pattern. This is particularly apparent in babies, which have the same kind of washed out pattern as Hypos. The saddles as well as the side blotches have less black than normal In fact, often the side blotches have no black whatsoever. That's it, no more no less. Now it is unfortunate that this leaves a lot to interpretation. Identifying Pastels can be and is subjective. It is very much a matter of opinion. There are definitely degrees of Pastelism. How much Pastelism is required to label an animal Pastel? I don't know what measure others may use, but I know what I look for in babies. I look for nearly no black in the side pattern. A very small amount of black can be found but nearly none normally.

This is my opinion on what a pastel boa should be.
A pastel in my opinion has brown / tan saddles with no black outline in them and the side medallions have very little to no black in them. Also a pastel does not have to be pink or red to be a pastel they can be gray sometimes only reduced black as Jeff describes. With the reduction of black in them the lighter colors such as pink and red stand out more.

Take care
Tom

Not to be a jerk or anything but I would suggest holding off on breeding until you can grasp the basics of breeding, this question proves you do not, my suggestion would be to read, and learn as much as you can. You can go on the classifieds section right now and find male albinos for 300$ or less that'll breed this year FYI if you feel the need, how old is your female? And are you prepared to house 30 babies if you get that many? If you can't spend 200-300$ on a male albino then chances are you can't spend 200-300$ on a baby rack to house them all, like I said my suggestion is that you are not ready, read learn all you can and get prepared first before you even consider breeding, and if you must breed for whatever reason ball pythons are much easier to breed and have small much more manageable clutches for some one on a budget. Just my two cents
