Some L.g.nigra

Phil Peak Jan 27, 2013 08:47 AM

A couple of our projects. Black kingsnake from Casey county in the hill country of Kentucky. This population is very dark with no pattern as adults.

An intergradient population of L.g.nigra x L.g.holbrooki from along the Mississippi River corridor in Fulton county Kentucky. This is a young adult male. The speckling becomes more pronounced as these snakes age.

Its good to be keeping some kingsnakes again.

Phil,

Have you found nigra x holbrooki intergrades in any county in KY other than Fulton?

We have also found them in Hickman and southern Carlisle counties. The photo above is from Hickman county.

Thanks! Always nice to see your pics of herps in the wild.

Those are gorgeous, Phil. Both are beautiful in their own way.

Thanks Ross! As much as I like these I must admit that I am jealous of all the beautiful Cal kings in your neck of the woods not to mention the incredible diversity. I'm sure there's never a dull moment while searching for kings. I recently picked up a super nice banded desert phase Cal king and look forward to raising it up.

Yes Phil, they are a lot of fun. I'm glad to hear you appreciate them too. There's no shortage of cool looking snakes in your state. My favorite are your yellow Pines.

Phil, I have to say that is one of the blackest nigras I have seen. Very nice. Most that I have seen have at least some visible pattern left as adults. My buddy had some Todd Co. animals that were pretty close, but yours wins!!!

Interestingly enough, there are some that even have venters which are probably 75- 80% black.
