Rat bedding??

ballfreak Feb 18, 2013 08:16 PM

I have been using pelleted bedding aka horse bedding but I don't care for the smell of the bedding. I wanted to hear if anyone has been using yesterday's news? Price wise it's a big difference I have seen it for 20.00 a 30 pound bag I think compare that to a 7.00 bag of horse bedding? Any suggestions on what I can use or does anyone buy yesterday's news for cheaper and does it work well? Aspen bedding gets funky quick and to crazy of the smell either. Thanks for any help.

I use pine shavings. $6 for a large bag of compressed pine from my local garden supply. Newpaper sucks. Gets too messy.

I agree that pine is still the best for rodents, but not reptiles. Aspen starts to stink in about 2 days and have tried and don't like any if those paper products like care fresh, etc.

How does the pine smell? I tried aspen and that stinks bad!!
Thanks!

Pine doesn't really stink. I never thought aspen did either though. Go to a pet store and smell it. It smells like pine.

yes...go cheap......pine....farm stores, Agway, Tractor Supply, etc...local....smells like pine...best answer in awhile...LOL...Yep....

.....I used pine for all rodents.,...even the ones that
""can't be on pine""......yea...ok....

.....as for carefresh and shredded paper like the others mentioned...I didn't like it...and it costs so much....it's for the person with one hamster...not thousands....

goodluck...

Pine is fine. Been using it for years. Other people have too. Shoot, I use it for my colubrids and rosy boas too. Some say not to. I learned from guys been using it for 20 years without problems. I don't use it on the pythons just because it molds too much in high humidity. Corns, Rosies, Bulls, Hogs. It's all good. Just can't use cedar or pine bark. Most shavings have almost no bark at all. Many of the species we keep are native to Pine forests. If it's good enough for them, it's ok for me. Like I said though, no bark. Too many oils and sap in the bark.

TV and computer screens will make you blind too...

people whine about everything...I once saw a $20,000 snake on pine...it didn't smoke or cough....

rats.,....average life span here for a breeder was 7 1/2 months......for feeders it's what 3 or 4 weeks....

they'll get over the smell of pine when the ball grabs them by the head....

anyways...pine....many species of pine...some smell and some don't really smell.....they all work....I bred for 21 years plus years before like decades before that....

.....I have seen rats that are bedded on fecal matter ....my eyes cried for help....the rats looked well....they might have been cursing the owner in ratanese....but he nor I could understand them....
