why does this happen?

ballfreak Feb 22, 2013 04:22 PM

i have 4 ball pythons a while back i put one pair together to breed and when i put them together after a few seconds they were going bananas in there i mean thought one was going to be killed thats how violent it got after a minute i opened the tub and they both flew out it was nuts!!! a few days later i put them back together and nothing happened and they bred even though people swore they were two males but that couldnt be the case. now my other pair that have bred in the past done the same thing only not as violent but still pretty intense. has this happened to anyone before?

They have bred twice before I have 2 clutches from them.
I had them for 8 years totally impossible .

yes, i have seen this, though i don't know why it happens. two weeks ago i put a solid stud male in with a female that goes for me just about yearly - the second he got into her enclosure, he went insane, brutally slapping and throwing her all over, basically trying to force her into nothingness... so i removed him and tried again a week later to the same result.

i can only assume he has his reasons and knows something i don't. i'd love to know what it is.

Thank god someone else has seen this as well. Did he not calm down after a few minutes? Mine calmed and I left them together but it was
Crazy to see it happen again. Thanks for your post.

i observed them for as long as i could stand to - he showed no signs of calming down, just getting more violent.

he must be broke $ or smell like another woman....or it's her time of the month?...

...seriously...the smell like another male idea is true....if she smells funny...he might try and fight her....

....sometimes too I think we just wake them up...they didn't have their eyes closed(this really is a slim chance idea)...

//....keep trying...feed them too.....

i think yr theory makes sense. there is another male i am consistently putting in her enclosure - so yes, other male smell. people are always saying the scent of another male can get a second male to kick in gear and competitively mate, but maybe if that scent is everywhere it can mask the "hey i'm a female you nimrod" effect that we keepers always assume is apparent to secondary males. anyway, till i hear a better theory, this is what i'm going to work with.

I also agree with that theory! Thanks for answering
My question!

.....cool.....point for me...LOL....no....it really is the best thought.....clean the females cage of everyting IF it's dirty...if not...just stick her into the males cages from now on and maybe give her a bath from time to time after copulating....it always makes me feel better.....I have seen balls freak out for all kinds of reasons I suppose....we have no sure way of telling....just good guesses....

.....good luck....still plenty of time to get all the girls bred -up yet........

.....((for the "Amish Mafia" fans....just 'red up' their cages from time to time....they get all rootchy with the place all over with schmootz)).....
