Pregnant Reptile Keeper! Help!!!!

vwine Feb 27, 2013 03:27 PM

So I started working at a wildlife education center as an animal/reptile keeper about 4 weeks ago. However, I just found out I was pregnant with my second child who is 9 months old. I believe I am due October 27th. I don't know any other keepers who have worked while pregnant and I was hoping to be able to talk to others who may have gone through this. I am wondering what kinds of things to be concerned about and worried about. We have many reptiles and amphibians. I know I will be lifting and moving things a lot too.

So yup, I am a little overwhelmed. If you have and experience or anything, let me know.

The CDC officially advises people who are pregnant, or have small children, or are elderly, not to have reptiles as pets. Curiously, they do not similarly advise the same group of people not to eat chicken.

I kept all my reptiles in my home throughout my wife's pregnancy and for my kid's entire life since. The Kid has handled all the reptiles personally; we simply ensure she washes her hands with soap after each encounter.

The CDC has to assume "lowest common denominator" with their recommendations--people who are lax in hygiene or kids who put everything in their mouths.

Granted, I only had 5-10 herps at the time, but they included turtles, which many people fear out of Salmonella concerns.

Personally, I think if you are maintaining high hygiene standards at your place of employment, you have little to fear. I would still seek others' opinions, however.
