Putting a place with a snake

rtdunham Mar 07, 2013 07:01 PM

Here's a little chain king I found in the South Carolina low country, and a pic I took of the site where i found him. I taped a blowup of it to the back of his tank. I don't know that it made him feel any more at home, but it was always a nice reminder to me that these animals are living and breeding in the wild, and have, in this form, for thousands of years at least. Sort of a connection to the land, and the animal's connection to it. (I found him under the RR ties lower left in the photo)

I also brought back a couple rusty RR spikes from within a couple yards of where i found him, and put them in the cage, added to the sense of place, and to my recollection of the experience.

(But not to go overboard: On a subsequent trip i found a little Cottonmouth maybe 50-75 feet from where i found the king. I did not bring it back as a cage decoration.

Never thought of that and what a great idea!!! I have caught more then half of my breeding stock and wish I had those kind of pics with all of them. Future pics will be taken!!!!!!

Yeah, it is a ridiculously good idea in my opinion.

I'm not so sure the cobble stone entrance way to my front door would have made the best looking backdrop when I recently found a stuffed-full-of-toads Eastern Garter not long ago as I brought my dog in from a late night walk though..LOL!

Wouldn't that have been freakin AWESOME to have that big torn up stump photo with all the eggs and snakes pouring out of it for your locale Black Rat's cage backdrop a while ago?...

If you were into garters that would make one funny background pic for a cage for sure Doug. !!! I was looking forward to helping that stump spot this spring. Going to be hard to study that area from KS!!!! I will never forget that experience and might have to give that location to someone on the field herp forum for studying. (have to get permission from owner first of course). Shame to let that go unstudied IMO.

Yeah, I agree. It sucks that you are personally so far away from it now with your new move and all. But yeah, I think telling the right person/people would be a great idea. We both know there are folks that have waited their entire careers for an awesome study opportunity like that...
