Ball Python Bite..

13ig13all Oct 06, 2003 11:57 PM

I got bit by my ball python today as I was attempting to feed it (guess it was really hungry). I had very low lighting at the time so the python must of mistaken my finger for a pinkie. The python was able to pierce my skin and cause some minor bleeding. I cleaned the bite and put some iodine solution on my finger.

I have never been bitten before by my reptiles and I want to make sure I have done enough to prevent an infection of some kind. Is there something else I should do?

THank you in advance.

just wash it with soap and water and it should be fine.

Please tell me what these "facts" might be? As I understand it, evolution is STILL just a theory.
Oh, and BTW, even Darwin is a believer now! :0)

An interesting topic for some - science/evolution vs. religion/creationism – but personally I hope it doesn’t rear its ugly head on the python forums again.

But there’s a perfect place in which to pursue it if you wish: the Open Discussion Forum.

In addition, if you go to the Old Forum Archives and search The Snake Forums on various combinations of keywords like evolution, religion or creationism, plus stupid, moron, evil or “your mother wears combat boots” you’ll find a spirited and oh-so-civil debate.

My view? It’s probably turtles all the way down.

Feed it something other than a pinky.

Why would you be feeding your bp a pinkie anything? A brand new hatchling can take an adult mouse or a rat pup. Secondly, after you finish tending to your finger, I would seriously give good thought to why you were bitten and try to correct that. That kinda stuff shouldn't be happening.

Couldn't you just use tongs? I use these when feeding my youngest BP her thawed mice. She seems to have a bad aim and tends to ignore the prey unless I make it move around on tongs, even though the thawed mouse is warm. So to protect myself from deadly ball python bites (lol) the tongs rule!
Maybe the pinkies were too small, so she went for the fingers?

Snake bites itch like heck, but that doesn't sound big enough to be really itchy. However, you may want to think about some sort of anti-itch over the counter product.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

Generaly, snakes identify their pray by their scent rather then by sight, so your python probibly bit you because your fingers smelled like a mouse, so it thought you were a mouse. To prevent this from happening again use tongs when feeding, and make sure you always wash your hands after handaling anything that your snake may consider food.
