Feeding dead snakes to your King snakes

Rick D Mar 16, 2013 02:33 PM

Does anyone do this? I found a dead garter snake yesterday that looked like it was killed by a hawk or owl. There was no smell to it so I took it home and put it in the freezer. I was going to wait a few weeks and then feed it to one of my kings.

Sure. I do it whenever possible for my indigos and black-headed pythons. Amazing to watch them eat their preferred prey. They go absolutely nuts for snake food. I always freeze the DOR first and cut it into pieces if it is too large.

Do they ever decide to refuse other prey after tasting the preferred ?

I can only speak to my experience, but I have not had that problem. I suspect the BHP's would eat a Quarterpounder with cheese, given the opportunity.

Indigo Forum?

Yeah. Love those big blue/black super-predators. Also love the kings and despite the forum bickering, I have learned a lot here. I take what I want and leave the rest.
I have no idea if freezing the DOR's kills the parasites. I have been doing it for years and have seen no ill effects. Every once in a while I pick up a DOR squirrel or rabbit, freeze it, cut it into small pieces. My eastern getula love it! However, I draw the line at opossums.

I thought you were one of the Dry Guys!

Yup. Those are the big top gnarly predators!

Yeah, the bickering does get old. The same good advice and experience sharing could get disseminated with a simple paragraph that the folks ready to consider it would gladly hear without all the drama and stuff. That's one of the reasons I occasionally lurk over on the Indigo Forum. The folks there seem to impart the same useful experience and knowledge without all the "Tude" and generally are pretty respectful to one another. I admire that. There seems to be a very low tolerance for Bull over there but a lot of decent folks that go WAY out of their way to entertain questions from new folks and a serious comraderie overall. I guess it is a much smaller community with a hefty price tag to be a part of! Lol

I have often considered the Unicolor and Rubidus over the years. That's a real commitment though that I'm not sure I'm up to.

Yah. Dead Possum in the freezer is only slightly better than a Skunk. Lol

How can you NOT be impressed by this?

tbrophy Mar 16, 2013 05:20 PM

Yeah, that looks like Al Brutosky's rubidus. I heard it weighs more that 20 lbs! Truthfully, it is the personality friction on the Kingsnake forum that keeps it alive. Everyone loves to watch a train wreck. If there was no human conflict, no one would follow it.

BobS Mar 16, 2013 05:32 PM

Yeah that's certainly one perspective and I see the point. I think it has also contributed greatly to the deadness here though. Any group is going to have its ebb and flow and folks get busy with their lives and stuff and wander away for periods of time but this Forum at times to me seems to be on its way out. So many folks just have gotten tired and don't want to even post anymore because of all the stuff. Over the years I've never seen the lack of posts and traffic you see here now. My opinion is that spirited debate or discussion is one thing but the stuff that goes on here at times just ruins an otherwise nice site. I guess the Facebook thing without all this stuff also gives folks another outlet to enjoy the hobby without the negatives.

Oh well. It is what it is..... Lol

I like feeding snakes to my kings, the brooks really liked them.

Rick, do you have a updated pic of that king from Sean?
