Heating question

joesanphoto Mar 17, 2013 05:36 PM

I have been reading many post about under tank heaters - Are these enough to heat a glass tank to bring the ambient temp up to the reequired temperatures?

How do you maintain heat in your glass/screen top enclosures?

Thanks in advance!

We don't use Glass tanks . . .we use self built wooden cages in some cases . .we use plastic tubs in Racks
in many cases tubs like Rubbermaid, Sterilite and Iris type containers.

I like to use Booaphile Plastics cages Personally 421D and 422D
type Boaphile Plastic cages are my favorite cages.

You could get a tub Rubbermaid etc . . . type and use Flexwatt under one end to heat it . . . . . . . .

You also connect a Thermostat to that Flexwatt and that controls
the temperature to keep it in the correct range.

Go here and read about them

I have intentions of picking up one of these cages - whether it be from boaphile or one of the competitors - But They all have wait times of a few weeks to a couple of months, so I need to make something work right now.

Undertank heater will work fine, just get the appropriate one. You could cover a portion of the screen top with a towel, that could help retain temp in the tank if the room is chilly

I have a zoomed repti therm UTH 8" - i did the towel thing and the ambient temp in the tank is still only 73ish..

What's the glass surface temps over the heating pad? That's what matters

joesanphoto Mar 19, 2013 10:56 AM

about 2 inches above the heating pad it reads 74

You can try raising the temps in the room the cage is in as well, until you get a cage that holds heat/humidity properly. As far as cage manufacturers and turnaround time goes, Vision Products generally has a fairly short turn around time, less than a week to get a cage shipped out. I have their model 400 cage for my boa and it holds heat and humidity very well.

Good luck!

Unfortunately heating the room up is not an option - My oil bills are sky high as it is....

I was looking at the vision cages - LLL has them in stock - what is the best way to k=heat them? Is it easy to mount a radiant heat panel in there??

I spoke to the poeople at Boaphile this morning - they recommended a radiant heat panel AND the flexwatt belly heat..

Teh room the cage is in is typically high 60"s low 70" in winter and mid to high 60" in summer with the AC on. Since myhome is only on one heating and cooling zone I cannot raise the heat in the room without rasiing my entire house.
