Kingsnake Tub Size?

middlefork Mar 18, 2013 12:34 PM

What size tubs do most people use for keeping the Mtn. and Mex. (greeri, pyros etc.)sized kings? I'm just thinking about housing options for a couple of groups...Thanks.

I have a trio of adult pyros in a 40 gallon tank and an adult pair of pyros in a 30 gallon tank. Then I have three 20 gallon tanks with young trios and pairs. Several 10 gallon tanks with lone babies, and some babies in 12.7 quart tubs. I go for as much space as possible with deep aspen and plenty of hiding places, moss hide, etc.

I have a friend who successfully keeps his pyros in much smaller affairs, like adults in 32 quart tubs, which I only use for gravid females. He keeps babies in even smaller tubs, like two quarts.

Thanks for the reply Pyro.

You don't have any issues keeping pairs or trios in tanks together as adult? If so, when do you pair them up...after their first breeding? Thanks

i keep adult pairs in 28 or 32 qt tubs. i also brumate them together and keep them together all year long (mostly, i have a couple that i separate out in the fall prior to brumation).

again, these are all small to mid-sized tricolored lampros - i wouldn't be as comfortable with getula sharing a space all year long.

i work with tri-colored west mexican lampropeltis. some morph, some hobby, and some locale.

everyone is entitled to their options, but no one's opinion will ever change how i feel about the snakes i keep and breed.

I do the same thing with my trios and pairs, leaving them together all year except for when the mamas are gravid, in which case they get their own maternity tub to lay eggs and a few weeks of recovery time to fatten back up. I set up the designated trios or pairs as yearlings at the commencement of brumation. Never put two males together. They will fight. I found out by accident one of my females was really a male. Everybody should be about the same size.

Cohabitation makes breeding much easier, no guessing when she is ovulating, etc.

I cohabitate my pyros and bulls but would not do this with getula.

Thanks, valuable info guys. Brianm616 nice website. Pyromaniac, I have recently checked out your Youtube videos...that pyro eating pinkies video is cool…not to mention he's beautiful.
I only have one 2012 hatchling at the moment but I can understand how this could get addictive very quickly.

Glad you like my baby eating pinks! She is a big girl now!

Here she is last year mating. She is big one.

Some of her babies from last year.
Now you have only one pyro, but it would be a shame to miss out on the joy of producing your own babies of this awesome species!

Nice Pyros for sure, I really like those a lot especially the high blacks. I should have been clearer, I currently have a 1.0 (male, if I did that right?) normal Greeri...but Pyros are next on the list. I'll snap a photo later today and put it up...I need to he's growing like a weed.
Are you going to have any hatchlings for sale this year?

middlefork Mar 20, 2013 05:37 PM

Here's a pic of the greeri I got this winter. He's eating and shedding well and sometimes hangs out in his shrub.

pyromaniac Mar 20, 2013 06:09 PM

Oh my that IS a nice Greeri! I almost got into Greeri but went with pyro as my only lampropeltis mainly due to not having a lot of space for different assorted species.
