Albino Eastern King

JoeyCoco Mar 19, 2013 02:53 PM

I've read past posts here discussing whether a true, pure albino Eastern King exist. People have argued that the animals that have been posted, advertised and sold over the years are mutts...animals mixed with the albino gene of another specie of Lampropeltis. What is the consensus word on this...do pure albino eastern kings actually exist?

They exist. I know of two that were found, but never made it into the hobby. They were GA animals, from getula range, not integration zones. This was back in the early 90's, maybe even late 80's. So they do/have existed.

Hi,

I think one was found in a plowed field in S. Carolina about ten years ago. I heard it was injured, but survived initially anyway. I've never seen any from that lineage available though.

Or you could just breed the first gen babies from 2 wildcaught adults you found in close proximity back to each other. By raising up those neonates resulting from that pairing and then breeding them back together you will have a far greater chance of discovering any hidden rescessive traits within them.. this is something that is not done much anymore and that is why we have less new traits popping up.

"the fact of the matter is if folks want "pure" types they should go snake hunting. or at least do some research on potential breeding stock and not just pick anything up anywhere show/petshop"

Do you have any photos of those or any information on who found them?

flintdiver Mar 22, 2013 01:58 PM

No pics. I know the people that aquired them, not found them. I wasn't interested in them, so I didn't question them as to who found them.I couldn't keep any legally anyway. I just know they had them. One was kept in SC by a Savannah River Site herpetoligist and co-worker of W. Gibbons. That one came from somewhere around/on the site. The other by a broker/wholesaler/breeder here in ATL ( the biggest in ATL back then) that has since gone out of business and moved. That one came from just south of Atlanta. Both in pure getula range. Email me privately if you want further info, names , etc. But if you know anything about colubrid breeders back in the late 80's early 90's , you would know both of these people.

Do you mind just sharing the info here? Or is there something that should not be divulged publicly? I know others would be interested in hearing the info as well. Thanks.
