Giving the Boy Another Chance

pyromaniac Mar 27, 2013 03:09 PM

This morning I noticed a lot of activity in my adult pyro trio cage. The water bowl was almost tipped over and Mazar and Zunchara were cruising around restlessly. I put them in this tub and they have been busy all morning since. Several days ago I had thought they would not mate, and I had put her with my other male, which resulted in one mating. But maybe that was not enough; this current mating is really rockin' the house! This female seems to become receptive on average of three weeks later than my other female.

The actual lock. I like to see this as proof, as they sometimes will just roll around without really connecting.

Congrats Bob, glad to see you "intentionally" breeding the pyros this season. did you save many babies from last year? you must have that high band count guy from last year. any recent pics? dave.

pyromaniac Mar 27, 2013 06:03 PM

This is the most high banded one from last year. I kept 8 out of Zunchara's 10 babies. One was gifted to a friend and one escaped, fortunately not a high band one. It went into the front garden and I am hoping it is found this spring! Five of her babies are high band and then there is this high white little girl:

These are both females. Most of the clutch was females.

Wow! Those 2 are spectacular! hope you find the missing one this spring. Are you sure that it made it outside?

pyromaniac Mar 28, 2013 10:53 AM

It escaped because when I opened the little tub it was in it was clinging unseen to the underside of the lid which I set down on the couch near the open front door. By the time I noticed it was not in the tub it had made its escape. The front garden is east facing and home to a myriad population of fence lizards and tree frogs. I keep a pan of water available for the toads and other little critters. Lots of ivy and rocks to hide in. Fenced from cats and other larger predators. So there is hope.

She is the star of my pyro family. This mating is with the male I thought she didn't like. A definite lock. Will be interesting to see what comes of this.

That looks like a "Pyro-reguis"? Lol
It always amazes me how big a prey item those skinny little Pyros can eat!

That is a new hatchling before its first shed, full of yolk.
It is amazing how they can swallow big items. A tiny snake eating a pinky is like a human swallowing a football! LOL! Of course, we cant unhinge our jaws...
