My caiman ate the filter basket

carlos1 Oct 07, 2003 09:00 AM

Guys,

In the past my caiman has bit and removed the filter basket that goes over the end of the suction on my Fluval 404. I had no idea why she did it and didnt think much of it. When I got back this weekend, it was nowhere to be found, so she must have swallowed it this time. All crushed down (like i had found it previously) it was about as about 1 inch long and maybe 1/2 inch high. Shes about 3 feet. Is this something that she can pass or spit back up (with hairballs etc)? I'm worried that even though she probably crushed the basket, that it might somehow reform partially to its basket shape. I'm going to keep a careful eye on her weight and actvity levels but I am still concerned.

Thanks!

I would wait a couple days and see what happens. I can't imagine that this would cause a problem over a few days. I would also suggest you locate a vet that can look at your problem. I would think that a simple X-ray will be able to show it. I wouldn't think that removal would be very hard on a 3 footer.

In the past I have had my A. Alligators eat things such as plastic, plants, aluminum and other various things. All times there was no ill effect to the gator. In case you dont know crocodilian stomach acids are some of the strongest acids known to be in animals. For example in the wild they digest hooves, antlers, bone, etc. I would watch her for a few days continue to feed as normal and watch for her to start having fecal movements. Dont be discouraged if she eats less for a week or so. Also if your concerns arent resolved you could always have her X-rayed. Hopes this helps. Jason
