Possible? Or silly question?

Hopefully this isn't too silly to ask, but is it possible for a male snake to mate with two females at the same time? Was explaining snake breeding to somebody and the question popped up (sorry, couldn't resist the pun!).

The male uses one of the two hemipenies at a time, so the other one does not come out. In order to mate with two females at exactly the same time he would have to get both females to present their vents in just the right position, and be able to insert his hemipenises into both females simultaneously.

Also when they mate they wrap around each other and I don't think two females would do that at the same time. So in conclusion I don't think snakes would engage in a Ménage à trois.

Thanks! Though I'm aware that they only use the appropriate one at a time, I also know that when I pop snakes, both are (or can be) inverted at the same time, which got me to thinking . . . needless to say, the person I was explaining all this to seemed a little, uh, disturbed.

Snakes can evert both hemipene at the same time. Some species do that as a defensive behavior.

Not sure a male could copulate with two females at one time, but its possible, not very probable. Best wishes
