Pyro Aberrant Genetics?

bradlyb May 26, 2013 08:17 PM

I have been doing a lot of research trying to figure out what I need to find to produce my own aberrants in the future. I remember reading somewhere in the past that aberrant pyros are produced by a fluctuation of incubation temperatures.

Is this truly the case, our is it purely genetic? Is there a certain locality that produces more aberrants? Any insight into pyro genetics would be much appreciated.

My one pyro who is sort of aberrant. She was gravid in this pic. None of her two clutches has produced anything like her. She is descended from wc pyros in Davis Mountain. None of her ancestors or siblings were aberrant, either. I have seen them and am friends with the breeder.

So I don't have any idea why she is so different from any other pyro in my 26 pyro group, or in any of my friend's collection. I bought her because I liked her odd pattern, even though the seller was sort of surprised at my choice. Like, ewe, you want THAT?

Her third clutch is in the incubator; maybe one will pop out like her.

Thanks for the reply. So is abberancy in pyros just not understood well?

It depends on what you call aberrancy. Pyros have many pattern types and characteristics. And each of those have a range. So you get Applegate type pyros, in nature(I have see two) to all black and white(I have seen one) To blotched patterns(knoblocki types) To all the back bands crossing the red, etc etc etc.

There is a local not far from here where they have reverse knoblocki types, where the red connects down the sides.

Then like the pyro above, you get the white goofing up, sometimes to a large extent. The one above only has a couple of odd bands.

Then on occasion, you get all the above in one animal.

The only aberrancy people breed for seems to be lots of red, or lots of white.

So what do you consider aberrant?

I am breeding for mega bands.

Yea, I know, I watch, I like pyros alot. When I moved to Az. The first pyro I found was black and white, one red ring behind the head and that was it. I was so disappointed, hahahahahahaha. I traded it to a friend that found a "normal" one that same day. hahahahahahahahahaha. Never found another black and white since. Cheers

I would be sick of heart to have such an experience. A once in a lifetime find slipping through your fingers...

That wasn't the worse one. The worse pyro missed event was finding the nicist looking pyro you could imagine. The first third was red and white, no black what so ever. The middle third had black only on the top and they formed triads and barely touched on the top. The back third had the same black triads on the top, and had black crossing on the lower sides as well, forming Red diamonds on the side.

It was a huge animal and perfect color. It had a huge wide wide head with a long pointed nose. The perfect pyro head.

By that time, I pretty much stop catching them. But I had to keep this one. Sadly it died that night, it was hit by the car before we found it. When I first picked it up, you could not tell it had been hit. That by far was the worse.

It was also not in the mountains, but crossing the road way down in the grasslands. Cheers

Aww...that is sad. I hate finding DORs. Recenl,y I was on a two lane mountain highway and in the opposite lane was a big gopher snake that had been hit and was still alive. I could not stop in the vicinity because of heavy traffic and a road construction crew doing road work. When I turned around and got back to that area the snake was not there.

I am interested in aberrants that looks like the one John Lassiter posted on Ross Padillas forum: http://rosspadilla.forumatic.com/viewtopic.php?t=48

The aberrant hypo-e. I love the part striped part banded look.

Hi Bob, she is relatively normal, a few goofy bands.

There are many many really odd pyros out there. Which is one of the great things about them.

That animal is actually a turkey creek animal. Which brings up a story, a fella I knew found a communal nest there. many eggs, hatched eggs, six gravid females, some hatchlings etc. He was awful. He went into town, bought tools and tore the whole thing up. He was a Cali boy too.

Most people WANT the even banded with lots of red, much like I did when I moved out here. Once I lived here a while and had seen a number of pyros, my tastes changed. I then liked the "ODD" which were very normal, pyros. Best wishes

What is a turkey creek animal? Is this a colloquialism or an actual real thing?

I am one of those people who like uniqueness. I still have a lot to learn about pyros, I currently just work with Cal Kings and Alterna, but the next project I am going to start is going to be with pyros.

It is just hard to find information about them online, and even harder to find out what is available for purchase.

That's a beautiful animal!
