Hey EVE! Need some tips.

rincon Oct 07, 2003 11:48 AM

I am getting a pair of Dickersonae today. I've been told the female has been clutching like crazy and seems a little tired. Do you house you male and female collareds in separate cages? Should I use both a fluorescent and a full spec heat bulb? Any other tips on collareds would be appreciated as I only have experience with Chucks and Torts.

Brock, breeds dickersonae. Hes the authority, LOL But as far as your question, example my C. vestiguim I leave them together always. But if I had a female that was super tierd out, I personally would seperate a spell. Let her rest up, fatten up, and just plain old recoop. :0) Yes both lights uvb for calcium D3 and of course your basking heat light. Like I say give Brock a holler, these beauties are his expertise ! Lots of luck with them, they sure are perrty. Eve

always nice to see how the offspring turn out once they mature into adults...keep the pics coming, Geoff! As for your question regarding housing...if you have the space, by all means keep the male and female lizards in separate enclosures, especially following a brumation period. Male C. dickersonae can at times become rather overzealous during the mating season, with even violent aggression toward cagemates taking place on rare occasions...

I have two 3 x 3 foot visions, one for each, will that suffice? Each has a reptiglo 8.0 and a Mercury Vapor 100w Zoo Med basking bulb. Also each has a rock stack in the light and in the darker side. My main question is what to feed them. I know what I have heard, but maybe if you do something extra special for them? What vitamins should I add?

Sounds like that should be plenty of space for your lizards. Your lighting should be sufficient as well (very similar to mine). The dietary requirements for captive C. dickersonae seem to be comparable to most other Crotaphytus species. I primarily feed mine gutloaded crickets and "superworms", plus the occasional insects I catch out in the field. My suspicion is that other lizards comprise a large part of the diet of C. dickersonae in its natural habitat, but I can't get myself to feed them to my captives. The only nutritional supplement I use is Miner-All (with vit D-3), which I dust the insects with about 3 times per week. I use a wide variety of food matter as gutload material, which hopefully provides an ample supply of vitamins to my lizards.
