Sorry I just didn't want to wait two months for an answer on the garder forum.
Is this a common garder or a eastern ribbin snake?

It looks more like a common garter to me. The two species look so much alike; I could be mistaken.

Bob, they are not even close, ribbons are LONNNNNGGGGGGGGG and skinny. You can see ribbons in nature as close as west texas. Cheers

The are pretty close to an untrained eye (myself) with all the veriation of each species.
I think size is irrelevant in this scenario, unless you have one of each snake and you know they are the same age and you know they have eaten the same meals all there life. Then yea you could probable say with certainty, based on size, that this is a ribbon because it is longer. Just facts based on my opinion.

They do look a lot alike. I have looked at a lot of pictures of each snake and it is hard to tell from a picture sometimes without getting the full three D affect and texture.

Ribbon snakes have a white spot in front of the eye; garter snakes don’t have one

Thanks, good eye. (pun)

There are so many variation of each species it is hard to tell from the untrained eye.

That is a very good distinguishing mark

Thanks again.
