Considering Burm.......please help

jtrott Oct 07, 2003 12:40 PM

I have been considering a male burmese. I have had about 1 year experience with care of Ball Pythons and Boas. I have a strong understanding of care. I was wondering about the growth potential of a male burm during the first year on a normal feeding schedule?

Thanks for your help
Jason

Like all herps, every burm is different, and growth will be determined by MANY factors such as genetics, quality of diet, feeding schedule, temperature/humidity levels, space, lighting, etc. You can expect a male to grow from 4-8' in its first year. One of the biggest burms I have ever seen was a male that was 17'....a real monster for a boy burm. So, don't think you are getting a small burm just because it is a male....most likely it will, but just be prepared. If you have mastered basic husbandry and know the proper protocols for managing large constrictors (ie. locked enclosures, use of tongs when feeding, use of shields, feeding snake in its own cage, etc), AND, if you have the maturity (you didn't mention age but it sounds like you are old enough) then it sounds like you are ready to go. Good luck.

I am a 25 year old male that has read about reptiles and care for about 5 years before I ever considered getting one. I purchased my first ball, a male, in November of last year and my collection has since expanded to 2.1 ball pythons 1.1 BCI, and 1.0 Argentine Red Tegu. I was basically just questioning to see what to expect. I am currently in an apartment and looking at buying a house within the next year, that is the only reason I asked. Thanks for the help Rob. Much appreciated.
