Size of Giant Gecko?????

jag Oct 07, 2003 12:43 PM

How big does a leo have to be before it is declared as a Giant? Starburst AKA "Fatty" is getting huge. I weight her this morning and she was at 84 grams and 9 1/2 inches long. We got her about a month agi and she was at 63 grams and he said she should get about 70 grams buts thats it. That the biggest he ever got with her and she ws full grown then but she has got an inch longer and well over 70 grams?

Being a Giant is a genetic trait not just something attained by weight put on. It is also a trait that most people don't realize effects LENGTH not weight. The typical purebreed giants you see from ron tremper are between 10.5-11.5 range most fall around 11 in. The weight is due to them being long not them being fat. Most giants are extremely skinny until they reach full length and then put on body weight, not the other way around. I have several geckos that you would say were huge but they aren't gaints most of my females (most are from tremper but not giants) are well over 80 grams, I had one last year that hit 100 (she was a little plump but wan't fat she was kind of long for a female 10 in but NOT a giant). Therefore i wouldn't consider your gecko a giant no matter how fat it gets.

OK i understand. My leo isnt fat anyhow. She is ell feed and gets plenty of room to run around. I was just asking a simple question. My other full grown female is only 60 grams. thats why i was asking. I didnt mean to offend any one.

Does anyone else find it hard to believe giants are a genetic trait. I'm not saying Ron is lying I just don't notice that much of a difference from normal leopard geckos.I saw someone selling an adult giant and a tang tremper at a show. The tang was actually larger. I'll admit I don't know the exact ages but I have seen many geckos labeled giants, even some from Ron's stock that really weren't that much larger than most normals and even smaller than some large normals. I have read on here before that wild geckos are naturally larger, and that in captivity this is often bred out. Since there is no definitive gap between normals and giants how can you classify them?

I too thought it was hard to believe that they were genetic until I saw the ones he brought to Daytona. They were huge. The regular size leos just paled in comparison to them...

EVERYTHING is genetic! I think it is line bred too. Once you get such a saturation of genes in a line it can act like recessive traits. I have heard lots of stories about people that bought "giants" that did not grow to potential. Same thing with the stripe and jungle. Lots of stories about outcrossing that did not breed back true. NOthing I have proven myself though.
