A couple new cal kings!

Glenbrooks Jun 24, 2013 01:20 AM

I really like the unique look of these two. I got them from the good folks at GBU in Lodi, CA. The Banana is a male, and the high white is a female. What might their offspring look like?

Sorry but I can't stand when people mix yellow with white. Most people want a lean white or a rich yellow. The offspring will have a mixture of both and often you won't know until they are adults, which makes them misleading to buyers. Nice looking snakes though.

No offense taken. The truth is, I have a lot of time before I need to decide if I am really going to pair these two up. I have bred many colubrids in the past, but I have not had previous experience breeding cal kings, so you input is helpful.

Glad no offense was taken. They are very nice and if they were mine, I'd pair them up with bandeds of the same color. No matter what you pair them up with, you'll get some cool patterns in the clutch.

Those're both gorgeous! Yeah, I gotta agree w/ Ross, however and say pair 'em w/ bandeds. You'll probably get more variation in pattern if you do.

Thanks, I do really like brighter and cleaner whites and yellows in Cal kings,so maybe breeding these two is not the best idea. I'll have to decide that in a couple of years.

I have to agree with Ross as well.

Your brown and yellow king is already very light and pretty, so mixing in white may produce a yellow color that is in-between and not very vivid, with a darker background. Usually, potential buyers of Cal kings either want pretty yellow like you have already or clean white like you have already.

But I am a banded Cal king fan, always have been. The banded snakes can throw interesting patterns when mixed with non-banded Calis. Dots, squiggles, fun suff. Even an exclaimation point sometimes. Cal kings are great! Good luck with them.

Compliments to you for coming to the forum with an open mind, and being willing to listen to opinions without taking offense. There's too little of that here, and your responses were a breath of fresh air. Good luck with your snakes.

Thanks, I try to be open to advice from people who have had more experience than I have, and also I am always willing to share my opinion with people who have not yet had the experiences that I have had. It sure can save time and frustration by learning from many people's experience. That is sort of the point of having a forum, right?
We don't all have to agree, but opinions and experiences can be very valuable.
