Sistrurus miliarius husbandry

SalS May 27, 2003 03:20 PM

I am considering getting my second hot snake and I'm trying to get husbandry information on S. m. barbouri (Dusky Pigmy Rattlsnake) or S. m. miliarius (Carolina pigmy rattlesnake). Any info you could give me on keeping these snakes would be greatly appreciated. Just to reiterate, I don't have one yet, and I just want to get more information. I currently have a Southern Copperhead that I've kept for close to 2 years.

Depending upon the size of the snake, & if wild caught, on the individual animal, they can be very easy to maintain, or extremely difficult. Neonates may take a lot of work & a little luck to get started feeding. Some adult wild caughts will be difficult, though most will do well. Any wild caught will need a good worming. As far as other difficulties once feeding is established, there are not many. Two hooks seem to work better than one. They don't hang on a hook as well as Crotalus do.
A diet of rodents will get better size on them than their (usual) natural diet of frogs & lizards.
