Hit the Odds Again This Year!

scaledverts Jul 12, 2013 04:27 PM

Hello,

So my cal king eggs are finally starting to hatch. I had a bit of bad luck with the clutch from my lavender mosaic and blizard cal king. The female dropped 9 good eggs but some fly/incubation issues resulted in me only getting two eggs to go full term.

HERE is the original post about that breeding

Well, needless to say I was figuring that I would end up with triple hets only (still pretty cool but I was hoping for some mosaics).

Well the snake gods have seen fit to give me a 1.1 pair of triple het mosaics out the two eggs! Let's just say that I am beyond stoked here!

Sorry for the bad pic, they just hatched and I didn't want to disturb them too much!

Cheers,

Kyle

Cool snakes but I am not sure why you are surprised?

A blizzard (albino hypermelanistic) bred to a lavender would produce triple hets, which you have. The mosaic is NOT a recessive gene, it is an aberrancy, which can pop up in the first breeding and is not predictable.

Hey Kerby,

My understanding of the mosaic gene is it is a codom gene. I knew it wasn't simple recessive. Is that not true? The pattern seems a bit to predictable to me for it to only be a polygenic aberrancy.

My surprise is mainly in the odds of hitting 1.1 mosaics with only 2 eggs in the clutch.

I'm happy with the triple hets anyway the mosaic adds a really interesting twist to it.

Hey man I didn't even see your post but I just posted above you a tip that really helped me cause I had fly issues last year with my eggs.

My understanding is that this particular "mosaic" gene is a co-dominant trait. Cool snakes!
