Tip for flies on eggs

Aaron Jul 12, 2013 10:43 PM

I have had problems in the past with those tiny flys geting on my colubrid eggs. They start out just attacking the dead eggs but they have been known to overwhelm good eggs too. I've even heard of them attacking hatchlings, although I never experienced this.

This year just by chance I was out of vermiculite but happened to have a bunch of organic Alaskan peat moss. I ended up using it for all my eggs and I have not had any flies whatsoever attacking my eggs, even though they are all over around here and I've seen them elsewhere. Apparently they just do not like peat moss. I hope some of you find this useful.

BTW I am not putting the eggs in direct contact with the peat moss. I don't know if that's safe. I just have the eggs in open deli cups on top of the moist peat moss and all is inside a regular shoebox with airholes.

Edit: Sorry it's not organic Alaskan peat moss, that's what I used for nestboxes. The moss that I used for the eggboxes is the decorative green moss, I think it's spaghnum. Anyways it's that green stuff that looks kinda like ferns. I can try to post a pic if anybody doesn't know what I'm talking about.

Ok here it is. Bought it a local nursery that sells plants and such.
