Hognosed likes micro-brewed beer...

Didn't that title just grab your attention? Don't worry I am not getting my snakes drunk. I do have a question though. Can anyone give any care tips for the tri-colored hognose (Lystrophis pulcher)? I am about to obtain a 2003 CB hatchling and I have never kept these guys before. Could you please point me in the direction of a care sheet or something?

Keep them at room tempeture in the 70's. I use peat moss as substrate. Mist the substrate every other day or so, so it's moist not wet. Of course a water bowl. Allow enough substrate so they can burrow. Should have no problems. Who are you getting it from?

I am getting one from Napa Valley snakes. I heard they are hard to begin feeding. Any hints on how to get them to start taking food?

Steve Emmerick at Napa Valley Snakes is a great guy. I bet the snake will already be feeding on pinks. If not place the snake in a small container like a mealworm container so it's dark and close to the pinkie. Leave it there for a day or two. If it doesn't take it try to sent it with a common toad. It should take it then. These are directions from Steve himself. I got a pair from him as well.

I bought one from Steve as well a few years ago, and I am sure he will tell you all you need to know , and he wont sell you a snake that is not alredy feeding on pinkie mice ! if you do get one that is feeding on pinkie mice dont go backwards!! if the snake does not eat just give it more time and it will eat . if it still does not eat after a few weeks then call or email Steve or me and we will let you know what to do next. to meny people think there snakes are going to die if they dont eat for a week or two . dont play there game ! give them time to really want to eat something. and as for me I keep all of mine just the same as I do most of my kings, corns, milks, mandarins, and some others all on pine shavings with a water bowl. temps from 73 to 84 degrees . with no extra humidity other than when they are about to shed. and I have had better results with breeding my tri-hogs then ant other snakes I have. good luck.
