Nine Baby Pyros

pyromaniac Aug 03, 2013 04:40 PM

Nine baby pyros! Dotz and Mazar did a good job for the third year in a row. One egg left to hatch. Dotz lays such a heavy calcium layer on her eggs it is impossible to candle it but I think it is good, just a slow one.

The proud parents. Dotz is the one with the dot on her neck.

Thanks, Dennis! I am amazed that this happens successfully. I feel like a newbie, so much to still learn.

Sweet. Congrats. That's a good sized clutch. What's the average sized clutch for Pyros?

My friend who does pyros (some of my breeding stock are his line) gets an average of 6 eggs per clutch. The smallest clutch I have this year is 6, and the other is 10, plus this nine and possibly 10 baby clutch. I have read that between three and 10 is normal.

Nice! I like the variation in this clutch. You might want to slit that remaining egg open manually, babies have been known to die when they couldn't cut the egg themselves in time, for whatever reason. Usually graybands but it could happen with anything.

Yes, I may just do that this morning. Thanks for the suggestion!

There does appear to be a living baby in this egg I just slit. Since making the slit it has widened and I take that to mean the baby is moving around.

Severely deformed with one tiny little snout complete with egg tooth on neck. Was already dead. But got 9 perfect ones so all is good.

That is a really wierd one! I had a corn snake egg that the exact same scenario happened with recently.

At any step of the way things can go wrong. It is actually a miracle that mainly the babies come out perfect.
