Boa Breeding and Genetics Question

shottz Aug 05, 2013 12:28 AM

I recently took over someone else's started project and I am new to genetics and I was wondering if someone could tell me what I should expect from breeding these next season. I purchased the following.

0.2 100% Het albino
1.1 Anery 66% Het albino

The 0.2 are 4 years old and the 1.1 going on 3 years. They are supposed all virgins. Does this sound like a decent project to breed out or should I look at getting some more morphs?

Could someone give me an idea of what I COULD expect to get out of breeding these? I didn't know 100% het albino was possible but I am just going off the paperwork.

Thanks in advance!

100% het means that one of that boas parents was a visual albino

There is some variability to expected results depending on IF one or both Anery 66% het Albinos prove out so....

If male Anery 66% het Albino proves out:

Anery het Albino x Het Albino
1/4 Albino het Anery
3/4 Het Anery 66% het Albino

If male Anery 66% het Albino does not prove out:
Anery x het Albino
all Het Anery 50% het Albino

With the pair Anery 66% het Albino, if BOTH prove out:
Anery het Albino x Anery het Albino
1/4 Snow
3/4 Anery 66% het Albino

If either (or both) do NOT prove out:
all Anery (unknown status on pos het Albino)

IMO is a weak project but already most of the way there. No matter what you'd be producing a lot of pos hets which have little to no value over normals. If (and is a big if) both pos hets proved out there would at least be some better visuals in the pile.

So as far as visual differences (not counting hets) there will only be Anery, "regular", and a small possibility of snow??? I think I will still breed them out because I don't have much experience in breeding large snakes and I like the fact that they have live babies, would be something amazing to witness for the first time, would it be possible to breed the male to all 3 females like you can with smaller snakes???

On the flip side 1 xxxl rat per week each snake gets expensive but hopefully worth it. I don't want to get rich or anything but id like to at least break even on feeding cost to offspring ratio

I have been raising up some hog island hypo crosses and stuff but they still have awhile for the are ready to breed so maybe this can get my feet wet.

Your best bet is to keep the male with one female and get one good litter instead of spreading him thin and get slugs or bad litters.Being your first time go for the better odds of one on one.

First, sell the male anery. You are going to need real males. Het albino females are way underated. they can make tons of great stuff. Get a couple of sunglow males with as much other codom as you can get (coral, motley, jungle, arabesque, whatever you can afford, but just plain sunglow is good enough) breeding pairs is the best way with boas. For the anery you can go two ways. Ghost or super ghost, or if you feel lucky, snow or albino het anery. Do the genetic math, and good luck! Kurt d.

Sunglow X ha= 1/4 each sunglow, albino, hypo het albino and het albino. Ghost x anery= 1/2 each ghost and anery. Snow x anery ha (if you hit) 1/2 snows and 1/2 anery ha.

Good point there are a few shows coming up I might see what I can get. Seems to be kind of hard to get males breeding size without taking out a loan. So you think it wouldn't work breeding 1 male to 3 females if I can't find a decent deal on some breeder size males?

With this combo I got now for visuals there could be snow, albino, anery and regular if the genetics are what they said they are correct? That sounds awesome to me as I haven't been breeding for so long and haven't got into expensive morphs with anything to speak of.

Also is there a guide on breeding boas that you would recommend, live birth sounds really interesting but I am finding some conflicting information about lowering temps and everything, just want to make sure I have the best and correct information for my first attempt at this.

They are on XXXL rats 1x per week ATM, I think that should bulk them up enough for breeding, those rats are about 550 grams.

Any other recommendations would be appreciated

thanks everyone so far!

It's tough to do well with boas moving males around, but it can be done. Your male is your weak link, being a poss het. There are males out there, be patient and keep your eyes open. Best of luck, kd

I found a khal albino male, would that be better than this anery het albino male?? if so which female would you breed it to?

Thanks!
