CDC and the 90,000

wildtropics Oct 07, 2003 04:34 PM

The statistic of 90,000 cases of salmonella in reptiles is a projected figure. The CDC's actual case count for reptiles was a much lower number before chickens and other sources were included also. They figured that salmonella cases were under reported, so the case count was inflated to accommodate missing data, much like the move to over count in a census to accommodate people that the census bureau says were missed or didn't want to be counted. The CDC has acknowledged this procedure and has caught a lot of flack for it. But PETA and HSUS still insist on using flawed data. ~Will~

You are absolutely correct. The CDC website states the TOTAL number of reported cases from all sources is around 40,000 a year. The projection of 90,000 is a guess.

and apparently HSUS has no problem with insisting that reptiles are the source of ALL reported and non-reported cases ... thats funny.

I'm going to write an article indicating that HSUS is the source for all hair-ball impaction in feline pets in the U.S. I figure it's about as relevant and fact-filled as their stance on reptiles amphibians.

How unfortunate. However, as a result of being fed up with such antics and local government knee-jerk reactionary legislation that seeks to undo us, I joined PIJAC today. "Don't Tread On Me"
