How to get ball python hatchling feeding

keng1111 Aug 10, 2013 08:19 PM

Hi, I just had my first clutch of ball pythons. About ten days ago they all shed then I set them up in their tubs and let a couple of days go by before I tried rat pinks none of them ate any and they went to waste.I let 5 days go and today tried mouse hoppers and 1 of the 6 ate. I heard some were a pain to get started but I just hope it isn't me doing something wrong. Am I going about it the right way or should I try something else? By the way their all in a rack with good temps and humidity. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hatchling rack? Size does matter. Lol. Hide box? Ten days isn't that bad, they might of had big yolks. Feed late evening or at night. Is your rack in a place with a lot of foot traffic? Sometimes I'll tape a piece of newspaper to my rack to cover the front of a slow starters tub so they feel a little safer and can't see me in there messing with my other snakes. Just be patient. Don't keep looking in on them.

I have good luck with the use of small hides ( jello boxes) with a hole big enough for the snake to crawl in and out of. Baby snakes are shy sometimes and like to ambush hopper mice and the hide gives them this opportunity. Also cooler temps than adults (say 78 degrees) I keep my hatchlings at an ambient temp and no hot spot needed either.
